For the reason Sakya prince Siddhartha who later became Buddha, the enlightened one was born here; the significance of the site is incomparable. The significance of Buddha's canonical doctrines is being more relevant in present unrest world. I would like to welcome and thank all those who have come here to celebrate this auspicious Buddha Jayanti and the first ever special award ceremony of Gautam Buddha International Peace Award.

This award of recognition, was established by the Government of Nepal in the name of Lord Shakyamuni Buddha to recognize and honour individuals and institutions all over the world who have made significant contributions for world peace according to the teachings of Lord Buddha.

As we know, Lumbini, the world heritage site is also the birth place of  Prince Siddartha who later became Lord Shakyamuni Buddha by being the foremost messenger of peace and compassion. On this special day  of Buddha Jayanti, also known as Vaisakh Poornima (Full moon Day) which celebrates the birth of the Buddha, we are very honoured to be able to present the first Gautam Buddha International Peace Award to the two honourable recipients His Excellencies Dr. Tadatoshi Akiba, Mayor of Hiroshima and Mr. Tomihisa Taue, Mayor of Nagasaki. We, the Award Selection Committee express great happiness in being able to nominate and honour the 2 noble recipients of the award and to be able to hold the ceremony here in the Sacred Garden of Lumbini.

The selection process had many stages. Many notable individuals and organizations were also considered eligible. However, the decision to award the Excellencies was unanimous.

The selection of  the nominees as joint recipients was due to their leadership in promotion of a nuclear free world, the reduction of military weapons and disarmament. In their drive to promote universal solidarity on these issues, their movement “Mayors for Peace” expanded over 4000 municipalities worldwide, has been adopted by two thirds of Japanese municipalities. They have also promoted the understanding of peace among the youths.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the 2 cities that were destroyed by Atomic Bombs during the Second World War in August 1945. More than Two Hundred Thousand people were killed and many suffered their whole lives from radiations and injuries. Those two cities due to the Excellencies’ efforts has transformed unbelievably into clean, modern and green cities now. These cities stand as symbols of peace and reconstruction.

The two Mayors, His Excellencies Mr. Akiba and Mr. Taue played a major role in coordinating the United Nations and other organizations to make the 2010 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty successful and also in promoting the Comprehensive Nuclear Ban Treaty calling for total abolition of nuclear weapons by 2020.

Because the efforts of the Mayors had such an impact on their own nation and the rest of the world, they were the logical choice to be honoured today for their work and dedication.

It is a matter of pride and inspiration to all the Nepalese people that Nepal is the birth place of Lord Shakyamuni Buddha. His message of peace needs to be embraced by all the citizens of this country so that they may all come together for the peaceful reconstruction of Nepal.

It is my sincere wish that the exemplary deeds of the two Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki may be an inspiration for the rest of the world and the message of peace, solidarity and compassion adopted by all.

In conclusion, I wish you all and everyone in this world -  peace and happiness. Let us all follow the path of love, compassion and willingness to work to make the world a better and safer place for future generations.

On this special occasion, let us love and not hate each other. Let us whole heartedly promote peace in the world and not war.

Lastly, I once again welcome all the distinguished guests assembled here on this special day in Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha to witness the first ever Gautam Buddha International   Peace Award ceremony.

Thank you
